My father said: "People usually make judgements based on their prior experience. Since different people, especially people from different generations, experience different things, the conclusions they make are likely different, leading to disagreements. Things change, but people don't."
depends. people pass on their experiences but the next generation doesn't necessarily need to accept. something like genetic diagrams, they might form new hybrids.
ReplyDeleteYep. the thing is if the older generation did listen to the even older generation, would they have gained that experience? it is likely that they disobeyed someone's advice, such that he gets to gain such an experience.
ReplyDeleteHence, if they advise other people and they do not listen, they would feel distraught, because they themselves had once disobeyed someone's advice, and paid so badly that they find it neccessary to warn the others about it.
That said, what the older generation had learnt in their lives need not be applicable now. That is a common reason for the younger generation not to heed their advice. While some things don't change, some things do, and it would be up to the younger generation to find out which is which for themselves.
So i feel that if the older generation could themselves recall what it was like when they themselves received advice from their own elders, and how it felt, and why they did not want to heed it, they should be able to understand. I think if all of us realise that the elders were once just like us, we could find a lot in common, and the generation gap might just be smaller than we think.
